In the second instalment of our Behind the Brand blog series, we spoke to Victoria Ashley, the Founder & CEO of Laundry Day.
Victoria founded Laundry Day on a mission to provide cannabis accessories with a modern, design-forward aesthetic. After being unable to find creatively designed smoking pieces that matched her style, Victoria set out to design her own.
Laundry Day Hudson and Charlotte glass pipes are now a regular feature in Top 10 lists and chic gift guides from publications like Vogue, Forbes and Refinery29. Victoria is paving the way with accessories that normalize cannabis consumption and bring beauty to the ritual.
What inspired you to start your company? Tell us a little bit about your products and brand.
Having suffered from misdiagnosed medical issues for about 3 years, I had taken it upon myself to use cannabis for pain relief. After experiencing the benefits of the flower on my overall health and mood, I had decided it was time to stop using from my boyfriends pipe from high school and invest in my own piece. I found the whole smoke shop experience to be super discouraging and left me feeling like this was a club I wasn’t allowed to be apart of. I thought that I couldn’t be the only person feeling this way, and that’s when I decided to start my own company.
Laundry Day pieces are crafted to double as home decor, they can both stand on their own and serve as streamlined vessels — offering a sharp counterpoint to existing options and designed to seamlessly integrate into your wellness routines.
What do you love about your job?
Previously, the space has catered to a certain profile, and if you didn’t connect with that lifestyle, you didn’t feel welcome to participate. I feel that Laundry Day encourages and empowers people, especially women, to ask questions and take ownership of their experiences that has not previously been welcomed.
What are some of the challenges you face working in the cannabis industry?
I find that the general public doesn’t quite understand what I do as a career. That doesn’t really bother me though, I can usually read whether or not to tell people that I am a product designer vs the owner of cannabis accessories company.
On the business side of things, payment processing and the many grey areas of our legal system can be a cause for many headaches.
What’s your cannabis ritual?
I love this question because everyone’s experiences and rituals are so different. I think that there is this expectation for those who work in the industry to be super social smokers or to be high all the time, and that is simply not the case. I like to smoke an indica strain, usually alone, and my purpose is typically to unwind and relax. I think that it is super important to set time aside to unplug and tune into yourself. Lighting candles and doing a yin meditative yoga is a great way to clear my head when I am feeling extra busy. I also love a few puffs of my Hudson Pipe right before bed.
Which other brands (cannabis or not) do you love and admire?
There are so many amazing women run companies that are really inspiring in their approaches, especially in stigmatized industries. Unbound and Dame Products are two companies in the sex tech space that I think are really changing the way we see and talk about sex. They have both really inspired the direction of Laundry Day. I also love what publications such as Broccoli and Gossamer are doing by a normalizing cannabis conversation in a very genuine and modern way.
